ANDES CHURCH, PERU

Our first experience of Peru was in Lima, and after settling into our hotel, we explored the city a bit on foot. Just across the busy street from our hotel, I met a little tan dog.  I have an affinity for dogs and all other creatures great and small, and a very difficult and regular occurrence during our trip was my exposure to the suffering of animals.

This little dog felt like she was losing her life force.  She had sores and scratches all over, and clearly itched from head to toe.  She was too mangy to touch so I waved at her and said a kind word.  The kindness in my eyes was like a magnet, and she instantly bonded with me.

People laughed as we walked the city streets while she displayed how well she could protect me.  She barked at people and lunged at cars in the road as she guarded me, then staggered from the exertion.  She looked up as if to say, "I would love to be in your life and I will protect you loyaly if you give me the chance".  It was heart wrenching.

Dan walked across a major intersection to a McDonald's.  Doggie and I stayed on our side of the street and entered a little park.  I found a plastic bag and held it like a bowl as I offered her some water.  She drank it with gratitude.  All the while, I was trying to figure out how to keep her from following us back to the hotel.  When Dan returned with some food, I gave her part of it and then started walking slowly back the way we had come. She continued following us, though she appeared to be getting weaker.

As we approached the hotel, I grew more and more concerned that she would attempt to cross the busy street in front of it.  We stopped at the last corner before the hotel's street and she gratefully laid herself down.  She looked absolutely exhausted.  I pulled a hamburger out of the bag, and placed it on the concrete beside her.  I grabbed Dan's hand, and we dashed across to the hotel.  I was so relieved that she stayed on the other side of the street with her piece of meat.  I am not sure that she even had the strength to go another step.  I had tears in my eyes as we made our way back to our hotel room.  My heart ached for her.

When confronted with situations like this I pray for the end of suffering on this planet. I call in joy and happiness for all beings. I have come to know that one of the reasons I am here on earth at this time is to assist in creating a new paradigm for healing.  Healing that comes not from suffering, but from love.  We are shifting away from the need to struggle to grow, and emerging into the energy of “love-fed” healing.  Our growth now occurs through the energies of love and support.  Many of us are calling in this new energy.  Its presence can be felt with us now.
